🏥 NHSE auto-registration for SystmOne practices

Written by Vanessa Gouveia

The NHSE auto registration integrates the Register with a GP surgery service directly with clinical systems.

This is separate from Healthtech-1’s automation of registrations, and they work in very different ways.

Who does NHSE auto-register?

Only a subset of patients - around 25% on average - and only when they meet all of NHS England's criteria:

  • Over 18

  • Using NHS login (at the highest P9 level of ID verification)

  • Within your catchment area

  • Transferring from another GP surgery

  • No sensitive marker on their record

➡️ Everyone else comes through Healthtech-1 as usual.

What it does, and what it leaves to you

Here's the difference at a glance - with NHSE, registrations arrive three different ways and your team manually completes the record. With Healthtech-1, it's one automated flow:

👉 For exactly what each one captures, see What Healthtech-1 codes vs NHSE auto-registration.

What about MPR?

It's easy to mix up NHSE's two features:

  • Auto-registration creates the record automatically - but your team still reviews and approves the codes it applies, and adds the remaining SNOMED codes it missed.

  • Manage Patient Registrations (MPR) works the other way round - your team reviews and approves each registration manually before it's even created.

Either way, there's manual work left for your team - whereas Healthtech-1 handles it all for you.

MPR is a separate feature with its own things to know, covered in full here: What is Manage Patient Registrations (MPR)?

How does this affect Healthtech-1 automation?

You have two options on how to proceed, while still using Healthtech-1's automation.

The option you choose will depend on the amount of information you wish to capture on the record, and how much additional work your practice wishes to take on.

Option 1: You choose not to enable NHSE auto reg & MPR

  • We continue automating 100% of registrations

  • You get the full coded dataset on every one

Option 2: You choose to enable NHSE auto reg & MPR

  • NHSE will automatically process ~25% of registrations

  • NHSE's MPR will send a further ~25% slice to your team to review and manually approve

  • Healthtech-1 will automate the remaining ~50%

But:

The patients processed by NHSE do not receive the full Healthtech-1 coded dataset, so practices will need to:

  • Manually review the record

  • Add any missing SNOMED codes

  • Action the patient's responses to our Local Form

As with any registration, these will still appear in your Hub with their Signals to action.

Changed your mind? Turning NHSE auto-registration off

If you'd like to stop NHSE processing your registrations, you'll need to raise a ServiceNow ticket with NHS England.

Once it's off, all eligible registrations come back through Healthtech-1 and you're back to the full coded dataset.

📅 Using Bookable? You'll need NHSE auto-registration off - it can delay us getting new patients booked in. See Turning off NHSE auto-registration (Bookable practices).
