AI Care Navigation in Bookable
We have developed an AI care navigator for Bookable to categorise free-text appointment requests from patients into general categories that can be assigned to clinicians. Read more on our article about AI Care Navigation.
Please note that we currently can't set capabilities for GPs, although this feature is on it's way! Any roles you select/deselect from GPs will have no effect.
How can I set capabilities for a clinician?
Adding New Clinicians
In order for clinicians to show on this list, we need to have detected an appointment of one of the Bookable slot types. Find out how to set up slots.
Sign onto the Hub
Click on settings (top right)
Open up the site you would like to edit clinicians for and find the "Bookable" tab
Select the clinician whose capabilities you would like to update
Set their role type, gender, and any languages spoken.
Tick/untick capabilities as appropriate
Scroll to the bottom of the page and hit "Save"
What are clinician capabilities?
Patients submit a free‑text request in Bookable, plus date of birth and sex at birth. We use this to assign the request to a clinician capability or other category so it can be routed appropriately.
A clinician capability may describe a symptom, condition, or procedure. They are aligned to defined competencies and typical patterns of demand in primary care.
🔬 Scope and limits
Clinician capabilities are not exhaustive. They represent presentations that allied health professionals (AHPs) can safely and appropriately manage in clinic.
Requests that fall outside these clinician capabilities are intentionally routed to a GP. This reduces inappropriate AHP bookings and supports safe care navigation.
🧑⚕️ Clinician Types
We support a number of different clinician types:
Nurses
Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs)
Physicians Associates (PAs)
Physiotherapists
Paramedics
Healthcare Assistants
Pharmacists
Mental Health Practitioners
Why some categories are broad vs specific
This mean here are some very specific clinician capabilities, like ‘Smear test’, and some very broad ones like ‘Skin - Rash’.
This is because without much more information (or even a picture) it’s not possible to know what kind of rash the patient is presenting with, they just need to see someone who can make an assessment, diagnosis and mange their rash, or escalate appropriately.
A smear test, on the other hand, is very easy to be specific about. For example, the patient might write: “I need to book my smear test”.
Can I add a new kind of capability?
The categories provided are not exhaustive. They represent presentations that allied health professionals (AHPs) can safely and appropriately manage in clinic.
As previously mentioned, requests that fall outside these categories are intentionally routed to a GP, which reduces inappropriate AHP bookings and supports safe care navigation.
If you believe there's a category that your clinicians can do that isn't represented by our list, we'd love to know!
Please get in touch with support to make your request ✨
Why can't I see the Bookable settings?
As changing these settings has clinical effects, you have to have the role "Bookable Clinical Admin" for the practice you're attempting to change.
This role should be applied to someone at your practice, but if you think you should also have access please get in touch with support.
