💬 Replying to patients

Written by Matthew

What's the difference between Reply and Internal Note?

The composer has two modes.

  1. Reply to patient sends an SMS to the patient. You need to sign off the request's classification before you can communicate with a patient.

  2. Internal Note is visible to your team only and is never sent; use it to ask a colleague (@mention them) or to record coding and safety-netting text against the thread. You can leave an Internal Note even before the classification is signed off.

Can I stop a patient replying to a text?

Yes, use the Patient Replies switch in the reply bar. Leave it on for a normal two-way message (the patient's reply reopens the thread).

You can turn it off to send a one-way notification the patient can't reply to. The sent message is tagged “One-way · no replies” in the timeline so the team knows.

What are Quick Replies and Self-Book Links?

The lightning icon inserts a practice template; press Tab to jump through any [placeholders] and fill them in.

The calendar icon sends a Self-Book Link that the patient can use to choose an appointment time; you can scope it to a pathway, face-to-face or telephone, interpreter or specific clinicians. The paperclip button lets you attach a file.

A patient attached photos – why are they blurred?

Patient-submitted photos are obscured by default to protect you from distressing content. Click one to open the lightbox and reveal it; that reveal is recorded in the audit trail. You can delete an inappropriate image before it's written to the record.
